Customer Q&A

HopeWorks

1

What's something unique about your programs?

At HopeWorks, we’re more than just a service provider—we’re a community of care. Our work is rooted in a holistic, trauma-informed approach that meets people where they are. We walk alongside individuals experiencing homelessness, many of whom have been deeply impacted by past negative experiences with institutions like jails, psychiatric facilities, or the foster care system. What sets us apart is our commitment to compassion and authenticity while using cutting-edge models and strategies to provide clients with the highest level of support. By fostering an atmosphere of acceptance, we can build meaningful relationships, even with those who have every reason not to trust.

This approach is best represented by our work at Hope Village, the very first newly constructed, single-site permanent supportive housing project in New Mexico. With 42 units and 24/7 wraparound services, we provide permanent homes for our clients who have experienced chronic homelessness and who need consistent support. We believe homelessness can be healed through empathy, consistency, and the generous spirit that each of our staff brings to work every day.

What's something you wish more people knew about your work?

Homelessness is often misunderstood. It’s not simply about substance use; more frequently, it’s about trauma. The extent of these challenges is also often overlooked. Many of the individuals we serve have experienced significant, often lifelong trauma, and that history plays a major role in their current circumstances. Homelessness is not the result of personal failure, but rather a symptom of larger systemic issues like disenfranchisement, marginalization, and inadequate access to support. This has required us to be more innovative and more compassionate than ever before. We are committed to developing new, creative strategies to meet these complex needs and ensure no one is left behind.

What's a common myth about addiction treatment that you want to debunk?

The idea that relapse is a sign of failure. This simply isn't true. The reality is addiction is a chronic illness that changes the brain's chemistry. Just like managing other chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, setbacks can be a normal part of the process. A relapse isn't a failure; it's a sign that a person's treatment plan needs to be adjusted or strengthened. Understanding this is imperative because it helps remove the immense feelings of guilt and shame that often prevent people from seeking help again. Every step forward, even after a stumble, is a victory.

Another common misconception is that substance use stems from a deficit of willpower or morality. Instead, many of those we serve have endured profound trauma, loss, and abuse—experiences that shaped how they cope with the world. Addiction is not a moral failing; it’s a common human response to pain. We can focus on recovery in the most holistic sense: mental, emotional, and physical. Through a harm reduction lens, we can empower those struggling with addiction to make steps toward wellness without shame or judgment. Healing begins with compassion.

How can someone reading this support HopeWorks?

Every donation of time, money, and creativity helps us continue our ongoing mission of supporting our most vulnerable clients. Even simply helping to spread the word about our organization is a powerful step forward. Challenge the harmful myths about homelessness by talking with your friends, coworkers, and neighbors. Share the truth; that homelessness is driven by rising housing costs, systemic trauma, lack of affordable care, and an under-resourced social safety net. Speak up when you can, and lead with empathy. These acts of kindness and generosity are what allow us to continue providing essential care and support to those who need it most. When we care for the most vulnerable among us, we build a stronger, healthier community for everyone.
